Volunteer Hot Spots

We’re looking for volunteers immediately to help in the following areas. If you’re interested, please contact us today:

  • General Volunteer
Help with community events over the summer. This would involve 3-4 hours in May in June at various events. This is a great position if you are looking to get involved this summer but do not have a lot of time!
  • High School Area Coordinator
Area coordinators are responsible for being in contact with staff and students from the 4-6 high schools in their region. They must also find a High School Rep for each school to help promote the program to the student body and keep the area coordinators updated with how activities are progressing at their school. This position is excellent if you are from the Waterloo region and would love to work with your high school again!
  • Marketing Director
Marketing Directors work alongside the VP of Marketing to ensure that the community events spread the word about High School SOS to parents and students. As a marketing director, you will need to think of creative and effective events to organize within the community, and to get as many high school students excited about attending the review sessions!
  • Tutor
We offer a variety of courses at our 'Exam-AID' review sessions and are looking for tutors to explain the key concepts and material to students. There will be two tutors per session (unless you prefer to be by yourself) and the packages are already created from last year. You will be responsible for evaluating the previous packages and making any necessary changes, as well helping students understand the course material before their final exam.

Why Volunteer

Volunteering with SOS creates waves of positive results for both fellow classmates and students around the world. For those who donate their time, being a part of SOS provides valuable skill development and unique travel opportunities. Volunteer positions are guaranteed to provide amazing experience for any co-op, summer, or full time position. SOS is a highly motivated and rapidly growing organization which connects volunteers with a network of like minded students and business contacts who support each other's success.

Here are a few thoughts from past volunteers:

"Participating in both the fundraising aspect of the trip and the trip itself was one of the best experiences I had as a University student. SOS allowed me to see at first hand the difference I was making." ' Holly Burton, Tutor and Volunteer Trip Participant, '07

"I found (the trip) particularly rewarding since I put in a lot of work pre-trip through tutoring Accounting and Business courses. My role felt much more important to not only raise the money on behalf of SOS, but also take that money and transform it into solid structures, laptops and smiling Belizeans." Lesley Hirano, Tutor and Volunteer Trip Participant, '07

"The Belize experience definitely helped me step outside of my own everyday life and see firsthand the hardships and difficulties communities in other regions of the world deal with. Yet, what I learned through the experience, and something that I would never have known had I not gone on the trip, was that this small community in Belize enjoyed life to the fullest, the company of family and friends and what little they had, in spite of their tribulations." - Vivek Sarma, Volunteer Trip Participant, '08
